Glutathione Testing

Glutathione Testing

Glutathione testing requires a single, non-fasting blood sample.

Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant and important antioxidant inside of cells. GSH in red blood cells (erythrocutes) is a sensitive indicator of GSH status inside the cells, the overall health of cells and of their ability to endure toxic challenges.

Testing and supporting appropriately high levels of erythrocyte GSH contributes significantly to safe and effective heavy metal (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, aluminum, etc.) detoxification.

Why Test Glutathione in Red Blood Cells?

GSH levels are thousands of times higher in cells than in plasma. Therefore it is clinically meaningful to test the level of total erythrocytes GSH as an indicator of how much GSH your body has.

GSH inside the cells can be increased as a way to protect the body from environmental toxins. It is possible to increase glutathione levels and to incorporate recycling of GSH in the body.

Alcohol consumption, smoking, regular physical exercise, and acute exposure to toxic metals can raise GSH levels and this causes it to be depleted in the body.Under such circumstances, it is essential to provide the body with key nutrients to help build and maintain functionally appropriate levels of GSH.

Some Important Nutrients for Glutathione

Magnesium and potassium are required for both energy dependent enzymatic steps in GSH synthesis; cysteine is the rate limiting amino acid.

Nutritional products that have been documented to increase erythrocyte GSH/GSH biosynthesis include alpha -lipoic acid, curcumin, cordyceps, oral liposomal GSH, nebulized GSH, and to a lesser extent, N-acetyl-L-cysteine.

At Green Health Acupuncture, we have a fully stocked herbal pharmacy with some of the best products on the market for glutathione synthesis and recycling.
